But Our Princess Is In Another Castle by B.J. Best is a unique collection of prose poetry. As a set of poems centered around a theme of retro video games, this book has the potential to reach out to audiences beyond just poets. Best does a great job of using popular video game and arcade titles and writing poems about life’s discoveries with them. Any fan of the old Atari and Nintendo games will enjoy taking a look at this book and reminiscing on all those years of button mashing.Many of the poems fit in with the timing of the video game player. There are several poems about finding love, losing love, and trudging through those coming-of-age years between childhood and becoming an adult. The majority of video game players fall right in those years. It is a wonderful portrayal of an adolescent Mario nerd finding connections between their life and the games that they are playing. Best begins his book with a quote from Lucky Wander Boy by D.B. Weiss that says, “There is a world beneath the glass that we can never know.” Video games and our own lives are the same in that they are a mystery. You can never fully know what will come up after the loading page.
As a middle child, one of the poems that stuck out to me was “Super Mario Bros.”. This poem reminds me of arguing with my older brothers over who gets to be Mario, and always getting Luigi instead, “In a two-player game, no one ever chooses to be Luigi, unless they are trying to be dimly / countercultural about it, like drinking Pepsi instead of Coke” (9). Best continues with a story about a childhood game, where one brother throws rocks at his target brother. It’s all fun until, “Finally, my head edging out, your rock / struck just above my temple, and I momentarily blacked out, then started bawling… and you were resoundingly punished. / I did not come to your defense” (9). I have many similar stories from my childhood. This is what Best does well in this book. He shares stories using video games any reader can directly connect with. As an adult, it is a nice memory to think back on and laugh about as I sip on my very own Coke.
What Gen X child doesn’t like to sit back and remember their youth? The excitement of finally beating that boss; the frustration of narrow defeat. Those 8 bit graphics with that old arcade music. But Our Princess Is In Another Castle brings back all of that nostalgia and more. Take this book to a retro arcade and enjoy the prose with some greasy pizza and a coke. Then go drop some coins into Pac Man and chase those ghosts.
